Imaginary Lines: Film Preview and Celebration

This event has passed

Join us for a celebration and preview of Imaginary Lines, featuring a performance by son jarocho collective Son Revoltura!

Imaginary Lines is an animated film directed by Nadia Hironaka, created in collaboration with artists, filmmakers, storytellers, and activists working with Philadelphia’s Latin American immigrant communities. Connecting the journeys of immigrants with the journeys of monarch butterflies, the film uplifts individual stories as well as the shared experiences that drive people across borders. The project was developed through a series of interviews, art workshops, and writing circles, hosted as part of Hironaka’s 2022 Leeway Foundation Media Artist + Activist Residency with the Philadelphia Folklore Project.

The Imaginary Lines Collective includes Hironaka’s longtime collaborator Matthew Suib, artist and activist Ileana Doble Hernandez, and writer, storyteller, and interdisciplinary artist Eric César Morales. The Collective worked closely with animator Emily Kobert to produce the first chapter of this episodic film.

Imaginary Lines would not be possible without the generous and creative contributions of documented and undocumented participants from Central and South America and the Caribbean.
